Chapter 1.1 The Preparation

You are going to be a brother.

You are going to be a big brother.

You ARE going to be gentle and helpful and loving and compassionate and awesome and without fail (when baby is involved) listen to Mommy and Daddy.

We bought, and read, The New Baby, I Am a Big Brother! and The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby.

We gave Valdy a teddy bear to practice his big brother skills on.  Baby Bear, clad in a diaper, was gently cradled, caressed and cared for.  Baby Bear was placed, delicately, in the baby swing, baby bassinet, and high chair. Baby Bear was given soft hugs and genial kisses. We practiced caring for Baby Bear together.

One afternoon, several weeks ago, Valdy approached me as I cleaned up after dinner.

“Mommy, would you like to see something with Baby Bear?”

“Oh, yes! Mommy would love to see something with Baby Bear?”

Valdy gingerly carried Baby Bear into the living room.  He lovingly lowered Baby Bear to the floor, and stood back with his arms at his side.

Valdy began to count “one, two, three, four, FIVE!” On five he jumped into the air, with the enthusiasm of a toddler that’s been denied cheerios or goldfish crackers for far too many days and has just been given carte blanche to both, and body slammed down on Baby Bear.  He looked up extraordinarily proud of himself.

Mommy threw up a bit in her mouth.

Ok, from the beginning.

You are going to be a brother.

You are going to be a big brother.

You ARE going to be gentle and helpful and loving and compassionate and awesome and without fail (when baby is involved) you are going to listen to Mommy and Daddy.
